As a long term fan of the Volk’s Electric Railway on Brighton Seafront I was delighted to be appointed alongside my inquisite colleague Su Hepburn to lead on the schools offer as part of HLF supported redevelopment programme.

We started from a blank slate and ended up developing a comprehensive offer for mainstream and SEND schools incorporating a session lead by a costumed Magnus Volk, seaside exploration backpacks, a downloadable ‘Who is Magnus?’ resource and on site interpretation in the form of a child friendly map and spotter’s guide.

Over the course of several months we got to know the lovely Volk’s team very well, and learnt more than we ever bargained for about narrow gauge electric railways! My young son Theo is now an official Volk’s fan too, and we can’t get near the seafront before he asks for a ride on the train!
